The first Monolators record on vinyl, recorded at the same time as Rejection Set Me Free. I remember I was really focused on trying to put out a 7" because I wanted to send it to John Peel, so he could play it on his show and we would become a huge success in the UK! Just like the White Stripes! Then John died before we got the records back from the pressing plant. In retrospect I'm not sure why I thought "Santa Claus Vs. Dave Matthews," out of our entire repertoire, would appeal to John...but...oh well.
I also can't remember what inspired us to record a spoken-word message for the B-side...the Beatles Christmas discs maybe? Anyway, I'm glad we did. Yes, that is the same Mechanor that appeared almost 10 years later in Mechanookie, although in the radio play he is played by a different actor.
And yes, this record did earn us some choice hate mail from touchy Dave Matthews fans. Sorry Dave, I don't really think you're the devil. Technically.
