This record was originally going to be an EP, with "We Fell Dead," "Kid's On Fire," and "Let's Be Best Friends In Space" on it. We started recording in our garage with Tom Bogdon manning the Teac 8-track--until the Teac (along with a bunch of other equipment) died fatally and we realized that it would cost us more to repair it than to take the unfinished tapes to a studio and pay someone else to do the engineering for us. Raymond Richards's studio was suggested to us by another band, and then the plan changed to making Best Friends In Space into a single and then work on a full-length with Raymond, which turned into Our Tears Have Wings.
Mike Dennis left the band between the garage recordings and the switch to Red Rockets Glare, and this record has his last recorded performance with us (on Kid's On Fire). We started calling ourselves a 2-piece at that point, with Tom and Raymond acting as studio musicians.
Incidentally--when we made this into a 7" single we wanted to keep with the space theme and have black vinyl with little white dots in it, to look like stars in outer space. The pressing plant told us they couldn't do that, but they could do a black and white swirl. That was ok with us, except that most of the discs didn't come out very swirly but instead a sort of flat grey color. Oh well.
